Sickboy
water never waits
WATER NEVER WAITS is the second official release from this three piece garage folk/punk outfit, and after taking a listen there is little room for ambivalence regarding this band and their music. This is not background music. You either like it straight up or not, and the boys in the band are fine with that.
Once again they attempt to execute the delicate balancing act of realising their ideals and aversions. Conveying emotion without wetting the bed, intelligence without being clever, and pop without being....well, too pop.
Sickboy does not claim to have necessarily struck this balance. They merely threw themselves at the contrasts in the course of these 7 songs. These are essentially original folk-songs pushed into the anti-folk stratosphere with howling guitars and both acerbic and touching lyrics drawn from equal parts Bob Dyaln, Lou Reed, Michael Stipe and the Oxford Book of English Verse.
WATER NEVER WAITS is a unique turn from the their previous effort, the 2005
VANITY & VELOCITY EP. It is more lush, with a slight touch of the poetic surreal, while the anger, angst, and overt boredom has given way to a wry smile and reserved thoughtful consideration. An unravelling of the self, but a guarded one. Clearly things have changed, but it’s hard to say by what degree. It’s matured, but not quite grown-up.
What comes next? More shows, more songs, more shows, & more songs. This band wants everything.
